Leadership Recognition

The students at Stonecrest participate in a variety of activities to augment life at the school and in the community. Junior and Intermediate students demonstrate leadership through participation in basketball, soccer, bordenball, volleyball, cross country running, touch football, badminton and track & field at the regional level. Intermediate students are provided with the opportunity to demonstrate leadership by leading spirit days, special assemblies and Character initiatives throughout the year. There is the opportunity to take a role in the primary choir, intermediate band and the biannual production of a musical. In addition to informal recognition on a regular basis, we also acknowledge student contributions in our classrooms, through school announcements, newsletters, assemblies, our principal’s report to school council, and end-of-year award ceremonies. We also recognize student leadership by incorporating their suggestions into our planning.

Our staff members have a wealth of professional qualifications including Special Education, Reading, French as a Second Language, Physical Education, Music, Visual Arts, and Computers in Education, and English as a Second Language. Teachers actively participate in numerous Board-wide professional development activities in literacy and numeracy. We recognize their initiative by providing and supporting opportunities for further professional growth. To further enhance school life, the staff willingly dedicates a considerable amount of personal time to volunteer as leaders of a wide variety of extracurricular clubs and events. Staff leadership is recognized by way of personal interactions with one another, school newsletters, assemblies, performance appraisals, and our principal’s report to school council.

Last year, our parent volunteers contributed a commendable number of hours of support to the benefit of students in our school. They run a weekly hot lunch program as well as a daily milk program. They fundraise through such programs as magazine subscriptions and events like the Family Dance and the June Barbecue. Our dedicated school council meets monthly and contributes approximately $15,000 to various resources and initiatives in our school. Most recently council has funded the installation of sixteen computer projectors in the classrooms. As invaluable partners, we thank our parents, guardians and volunteers on an on-going basis, acknowledging them in our principal’s report to school council, school newsletters, and our annual volunteer appreciation event.

As a rural school, Stonecrest offers different opportunities than its urban counterparts. The school is often the hub of activities. Every year, our students and staff submit entries in the annual Carp Fair. Our students are also invited to participate in the Royal Canadian Legion Essay and Poster Contest and the annual Terry Fox Run. Our community partners are recognized through the Community Bulletin Board in our hallway and the Community News section in our newsletter.
