Stonecrest Update Nov. 7

Stonecrest Update
Posted on 11/09/2020

Dear Stonecrest Families:

We hope you are all enjoying the warm and sunny weather that is upon us today and for the rest of weekend! It has been wonderful at school the last few days of this past week as teachers, ECEs, and EAs took advantage of the great weather to take learning outside for math, language, sciences, social studies, and other subjects.

Progress Reports: Progress Reports and Communications of Learning: Initial Observations will be available to parents electronically to parents on November 20th, through the online Report Card Portal.

If you have not done so, please register on the portal. You only need to register once, even if you have more than one child in the OCDSB. Your secure account will give you access to all of your children's report card data. For detailed registration instructions, please visit our website.

If you have previously registered for the portal, you do not need to register a second time. If you are having difficulties registering, please email reportcards@ocdsb.ca for assistance.

Hooks and Lockers: As winter weather approaches, we are beginning to do some trial runs on the use of hooks and lockers in the hallways. Like many things this years, as we look at guidelines and measures in place due to COVID-19, there are changes from previous years. As we continue to develop our plan in the coming week, I wanted to share some of the considerations and safety measures that are guiding our plan:

  • Students should continue to limit personal effects brought to class and school.

  • We will be reminding students to wash hands with soap and water after touching lockers or use an alcohol-based hand rub; and to never touch their eyes, nose or mouth with unwashed hands following locker/hook use.

  • Maintaining physical distance for access to lockers/cubbies/hooks continues to be essential.

  • Hooks and lockers are being spaced out as much as possible, and we are using strategies such as using alternating lockers and hooks, and/or providing alternate times for students in a class to access the hooks or lockers in their area.

  • Only outdoor boots and outdoor clothing will be stored at hooks or in lockers, so everything else will come into the classrooms as it is now.

  • Different classes, grades, and areas of the school are finding different solutions based on space. Some of our classes and students in older grades may not be assigned hooks or lockers at all. Lockers and hooks are only required for wet winter boots and wet outdoor clothing. Classroom teachers will let students know what their class is doing for hooks and lockers.

  • No locks will be used on lockers. If lockers are assigned to a student, they would only be to hold winter boots and wet outdoor clothing.

  • We are ensuring the cleaning of frequently touched surfaces in hook/cubby/locker areas.

  • Alternatives to lockers and hooks are being found in any areas of the school if it causes congestion/congregation.

Remembrance Day:This year we will be honouring Remembrance Day by every student and their class participating in the OCDSB District Remembrance Day 2020 Video Ceremony at 10:40 on November 11th. Additionally, students are engaging in their own class learning about Remembrance Day, Veteran’s Week, and Aboriginal Veteran’s Day. We are not permitted to distribute poppies this year, but if any parent would like to make an online donation to the Legion Poppy Fund, here’s the link

Stonecrest Elementary School Council: The next virtual meeting is Tuesday, November 10th at 6:30. More information will be sent out early next week on how to join the meeting. Everyone is welcome.

Parent Teacher Interviews: Please save the date. This fall, they will be held virtually on Thursday, November 26th after school and in the early evening.
