Doing Mathematics with Your Child (K-6)
Today, critical thinking, problem solving, reasoning ability and ability to communicate mathematically are essential skills. These processes are the foundation of mathematics instruction in Ontario schools. "Doing Mathematics with Your Child" is a guide available for parents of students in Kindergarten to Grade 6. This guide offers ways to engage their child in thinking and talking about mathematics around the four strands: number sense and numeration, measurement, patterning and algebra, and data management and probability. Check out the Parent Guide, created by the Ontario Ministry of Education, using the link above. Social Media Safety Presentation
Early October, many parents across the district had a chance to hear Paul Davis speak about social networking safety. The presentation had lots of great technical information, but his key message was really about parenting. Paul reminded us that if we want to keep our kids safe online we have to remember that as parents we provide our kids with technology and we set the rules about how it is used. Some of his key tips - set appropriate age limits for access to social media apps; set time limits on the use of technology; use privacy settings carefully; talk with kids about who they follow and know who is following them; keep technology out of the bedroom; install an wifi control access system - he encouraged parents to check out "Circle with Disney". Responsibility and accountability are our best strategies to keeping our kids safe online. If you want to learn more, check out his TedX presentation at the link above.
